Chicago, December 7–8, 2010
In December the London School of Economics Cities Programme, the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings, and the Alfred Herrhausen Society, hosted a major metropolitan summit in Chicago. The summit articulated a vision for the next economy and demonstrated how metropolitan areas can achieve this vision, in partnership with smart federal and state policies.

The “Great Recession” has dramatically disrupted the lives and livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. In the United States, cities and metropolitan areas are facing brutal fiscal challenges, new energy and environmental imperatives and structural demographic realities that demand innovative solutions.
The organizers of the Global Metro Summit also believe that the next economy will be led by metropolitan areas. To build the next economy, the United States must connect the macro global vision to the metro reality – the macro to the metro.
