CODECO – Culture Centre Consejo Agrarista
Founded by 30 gangs that agreed on truce, this centre provides legal graffiti and art as an alternative to drugs and violence.
CODECO was founded in 1990 by 30 gangs from Iztapalapa in order to fight against marginalization, drugs, crime, violence and discrimination against youth, women and poor people. They acknowledge the existence of gangs as a legitimate means of collective identity and through a wide offer of sport facilities, working spaces, artistic workshops and a library, promote legal graffiti and artistic work as an alternative to drugs, crime and violence. They also undertake several cultural and sport activities aimed at the integratation of the community and provide training on different skills that will broaden the employment opportunities of the attendants. Their work in the neighbourhood has highly contributed to recover the entire neighbourhood, which beforehand was considered a "non-go" area.
