Announcement of the third Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award in Istanbul
Deutsche Bank Announces Award for Istanbul in 2009
On 4 November 2009 Deutsche Bank will present the third Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, worth $100,000 USD, to a project based in the Istanbul metropolitan area. The open call for entries starts now and ends on September 11, 2009.
The Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award recognizes and celebrates creative solutions to the problems and opportunities that face the more than half of the world’s population that now lives in cities. Accordingly, the award focuses on projects that benefit communities and local residents by improving their urban environments. It seeks to encourage citizens, policy-makers, private business and non-governmental organisations to take a proactive role in creating shared responsibilities for the cities of the 21st century – mankind’s first truly ‘urban’ age. (In 2007, the award was presented to two projects in Mumbai, India and in 2008 to one project in Sao Paulo, Brazil.)
The award will be judged by an independent jury of international and local experts. The judges for the Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, Istanbul 2009, will be announced at the end of May.
The Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award is an initiative associated with the Urban Age project, a worldwide investigation into the future of cities jointly initiated by Deutsche Bank’s Alfred Herrhausen Society and the London School of Economics and Political Science. (See www.urban-age.net)
Following conferences in New York, London, Shanghai, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Berlin, Mumbai and Sao Paulo, the Urban Age project extends its interdisciplinary investigation to the process of urbanisation in Istanbul. In Istanbul, the city’s great past, present and future are clearly visible. London and Istanbul are the only mega-cities in Europe. Istanbul’s strategic location makes it a vital reference for understanding urban trends in South East Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. A conference on November 5th - 6th, 2009 will wrap up a year of research and analysis of the key issues focusing on Istanbul’s recent growth, including how its transcontinental terrain has established the city at the centre of the Turkish economy.
Urban Age will explore how Istanbul’s evolving polycentric form, shaped as much by its recently extended administrative boundaries, decentralized national policies, and increased investments in public transportation as by the new commercial and residential developments in outlying enclaves, and addresses the issue of social inclusion for a culturally diverse population.
Wolfgang Nowak, Managing Director, Alfred Herrhausen Society, said: “Governing a city means managing contradictions. The Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award and the Urban Age conference aim to encourage people to overcome contradictions and work together to take responsibility for their cities.”
