Berlinale Talent Campus
“Imagining Istanbul”
“Imagining Istanbul” is the title of the event that the Alfred Herrhausen Society is jointly hosting as part of the 59th Berlinale International Film Festival on February 11, 2009 with the Talent Campus, the Berlinale Competition and the Berlinale Forum.
Situated at the point where East meets West, the city of Istanbul has been inspiring filmmakers for years. Istanbul combines cultural myths such as the love stories from 1001 Nights and the realities of a Turkish metropolis faced with the political phenomena of modern times. Oscar winner Lloyd Phillips, film director and screenplay writer Reha Erdem, and producer and film director Yesim Ustaoglu will be debating whether Istanbul is still THE meeting place of East and West and together will be relating how filmmakers make use of Istanbul’s image in their films and how the city views itself during times of political unrest.
The event will be hosted by film director and author Martina Priessner.
