Politikwerkstatt: “Geopolitics in the digital age – what are Germany’s interests, what is Europe’s role?”

In cooperation with the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies of the University Bonn, Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) are hosting the 4th Politikwerkstatt on 5 November in Bonn. Everyone who is interested in the topic is warmly invited to join in and discuss and develop new positions. The workshop is entitled: “Geopolitics in the digital age – what are Germany’s interests, what is Europe’s role?”

We are asking this question against the background of a transforming international order: New powers are rising, old alliances fading. Certainties of the past need to be reconsidered. The ongoing process of digitalisation reinforces this trend: Supercomputer and artificial intelligence, interconnected applications and autonomous weapon systems – the development of these technologies is dominated by competing global powers. In the course of this digital transformation, Germany and Europe have to ask themselves what tomorrow’s world is going to look like. Will the EU become a subordinate partner of the United States, a vassal of China, or rather a power with its own formative control, remaining faithful to its principles? What are our interests in the digital age – as Germans and as Europeans?

With the project „Politikwerkstatt“ Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft and the German Council of Foreign Relations create an exchange platform for people with different expertise, politicians and citizens. The participants are asked to engage in the discourse and to develop own positions.

The Politikwerkstatt in Bonn is the fourth event of the series. The documentation of all former events is available in our publications section (German only).

Participation with invitation only. If you are interested, please contact Samuel Walker, project manager Europe.
